Aluminum sulfate is effective against most suspended and floating substances. The surfaces of fine particles present in water as turbidity carry a negative charge, repelling each other and maintaining a stable state. When this product is added, it reacts with the alkalinity in the water to produce positively charged aluminum hydroxide, which neutralizes the negative charges on the surfaces of the fine particles in the turbidity, causing aggregation and forming flocs. These flocs also adsorb fine turbidity particles, becoming larger and heavier, leading to sedimentation. This property is why it is used as a coagulant in drinking water, industrial water, and industrial wastewater.
