Now, earthquake measures start from the ground! We can calculate how much the investigation site will shake.
The damage caused by earthquakes varies depending on the magnitude of the earthquake and the hardness of the ground. In the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred in 2011, even areas far from the epicenter experienced damage such as building destruction and collapse. One of the factors contributing to this is believed to be the hardness of the ground. The magnitude of the earthquake is influenced by the ground strength and layer thickness as the earthquake occurs in the engineering foundation (the layer where seismic waves travel at over 400 m/s) and propagates through the ground. In other words, when the ground is soft and the layer thickness is large, the ground shaking becomes more significant. The investigation of ground shaking susceptibility calculates the necessary coefficient Co to determine seismic forces based on the results of ground surveys conducted through "surface wave exploration." It is possible to estimate seismic forces taking into account the ground conditions of the survey site.

basic information
【Details of Ground Vibration Susceptibility Survey】 In the ground vibration susceptibility survey using the "Surface Wave Exploration Method," we investigate the velocity structure of the ground and the thickness of the strata down to the engineering foundation. This allows us to understand how the ground will vibrate during an earthquake and calculate the extent to which the second-floor portion of a newly constructed building will displace (or how much it will be damaged). *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
