NFPA 79 (Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery) is the electrical standard for industrial machinery in the United States, detailing the rules that must be followed when selecting wiring materials used in industrial machinery exported to the U.S. The 2018 edition of NFPA 79 prohibits the use of thermoplastic resin insulated wires, including PVC (polyvinyl chloride), as power cables from servo amplifiers to servo motors (or from inverters to general-purpose motors) in principle. Traditionally, power lines for servo motors and motors for inverters have commonly used UL-certified PVC insulated wires. In the future, machines using these wires may not be permitted to operate by local law enforcement agencies in the U.S. This document provides the latest information to prepare for the anticipated risks.
