If the sample undergoes only elastic deformation, ideally the speeds on the way to and back will be the same (e=1). 3. If the sample undergoes plastic deformation, the kinetic energy of the micro ball is lost in the formation of the indentation, resulting in e<1. 4. The harder the sample and the less it undergoes plastic deformation, the larger e will be; conversely, the softer the sample, the smaller e will be.
