It has been used primarily in radio communication and measurement equipment for a long time, and many products are inexpensive because their characteristic impedance is not specified, making them suitable for frequencies below the VHF band. There are also versions with an impedance of 50Ω for personal radio use. They are widely used as bases for automotive antennas. In ham shops (amateur radio equipment stores), they may be referred to as "Mike connectors" using phonetic code (caution is advised to avoid confusion with microphone connectors, which are called "mic plugs" or "jacks"). They are not suitable for transmission above 300MHz. However, due to the balance of cost and performance, they are widely used in amateur radio from DC to 430MHz. They were developed around 1930 (UHF connector).
