A "dial gauge" typically has a type that measures 0.01mm, where one full rotation of the long needle corresponds to 1mm, with a maximum measurement of about 10mm. The 0.001mm type can measure up to 1mm, with one full rotation of the long needle corresponding to 0.2mm. The dial gauge is fixed to a stand with a magnetic base, which is secured to a reference surface. The object to be measured is placed under the gauge for comparative measurement against a block gauge.
