During discharge, the sulfuric acid in the electrolyte is consumed, and as discharge continues, the concentration of sulfuric acid decreases and it transforms into water. The reverse phenomenon occurs during charging. Current flows due to the movement of ions in the electrolyte and chemical reactions at the electrodes. Lead-acid batteries can be damaged if over-discharged or left after discharge.
