Research is underway in many regions of the world to detect the coronavirus in urban sewage. [Testing wastewater samples from sewage]
From infectious diseases to drug abuse, tracking has been conducted up to now. Currently, they are continuing research to detect the presence of COVID-19 in the community early, aiming to explore signs of a second wave and provide warnings in advance. These studies are believed to help determine in advance whether additional social preventive measures are needed in urban areas. Around the world, specialized teams, including scientists, government officials, and water quality managers, are being organized to investigate samples from sewage systems. Wastewater analysis is considered one of the barometers for virus detection. Individual studies suggest that there may be a two-week incubation period before the coronavirus appears. However, investigations of wastewater from urine and feces have detected the virus approximately three days later. In Hungary, a team of experts is conducting a multi-phase investigation. In Phase 1, they are examining changes in wastewater in nine cities in Hungary over a period of five months. Researchers collect new samples every two weeks from affected areas.

basic information
According to researchers, wastewater analysis could be a useful tool for tracking hotspots and alerting to the re-emergence of infections. The focus of this project is the city of Nagykanizsa. MOL, one of the largest companies in Hungary, and Pannonia University, one of Hungary's renowned universities, are supporting this research by providing laboratory space free of charge. Ohaus continues to support this effort by providing analytical equipment tailored for these labs. The research will be conducted in accordance with strict industry and government standards, as well as the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The main objective is to display RNA or DNA actually obtained from samples. Since the useful samples are infected, laboratory safety measures are of utmost concern. In addition to scientists wearing complete PPE (personal protective equipment) such as gloves, hats, face shields, and foot covers, all analytical equipment must be easy to clean and disinfect. This is a characteristic feature of all Ohaus balances and laboratory equipment, and it brings us great joy to play a small yet significant role in this ongoing global effort.
