Hard chrome plating is excellent in wear resistance and is sometimes applied to protect iron surfaces from rust, but its corrosion resistance is not perfect. This is due to the presence of microcracks, which are fine cracks that are not visible to the naked eye, on the surface of hard chrome plating. Corrosive factors can reach the base material through these microcracks, leading to corrosion. Therefore, microcracks are generally considered a drawback for hard chrome plating. One method to improve the corrosion resistance of hard chrome plating is to apply it in two layers, but hybrid chrome plating is a groundbreaking technology that significantly enhances corrosion resistance by impregnating glassy (silicon) material into the cracks to seal them. In corrosion resistance tests, while a single layer of hard chrome plating shows red rust formation in 2 hours, hybrid chrome plating demonstrates results that exceed 24 hours, proving to have better corrosion resistance than Ni-Cr plating, which is known for its high corrosion resistance treatment.
