Leave the growth of difficult-to-cultivate bacterial species to us!
▶ This medium is excellent for supporting the growth of lipid-dependent Malassezia species, including M. restricta, M. obtusa, and M. globosa, which are difficult to cultivate on conventional media (cultured at 30-32°C for 3-7 days). ▶ Some species precipitate the medium components, showing characteristic appearances (see photos 1, 2, 3, 8). ▶ Regarding the Candida genus, major Candida species can be identified by confirming colony characteristics. ▶ It strongly inhibits the growth of non-fungal microorganisms. ▶ This medium has high contrast and contains essential growth components in emulsion form, making it easier to recognize colony characteristics.

basic information
Malassezia is a yeast that resides on the skin of warm-blooded animals, including humans. It typically exists as a commensal organism within the normal flora of the skin but is often said to cause skin diseases. A major characteristic of Malassezia is its requirement for lipids, which is why it is also referred to as lipid-dependent yeast. Malassezia is known as the causative agent of "tinea versicolor," which has a high incidence rate following human ringworm and skin candidiasis, and it is also involved in the development of Malassezia folliculitis, Malassezia intertrigo, seborrheic dermatitis, and dandruff. Furthermore, it has been shown to cause deep-seated fungal infections in immunocompromised patients (such as neonates) receiving long-term central venous nutrition, particularly high-nutrient infusions containing lipids. Additionally, it has gained attention as an exacerbating factor in atopic dermatitis. Malassezia has a unique nutritional requirement for lipids for its growth, and its culture typically used media layered with olive oil. However, due to the difficulty of isolating the target organism with olive oil layering, we propose a product that incorporates lipid components as an emulsion within the medium. By becoming a solid medium, it can also be applied to tape methods, making isolation much easier.
