Large-scale solar power generation project at an old open-pit mining site in West Virginia Providing solar power generation to homes or single businesses in West Virginia. Due to the lack of large-scale solar power generation, the 2019 WV legislature expanded opportunities for this technology and streamlined the permitting process for two investor-owned utilities in the state. Recently, Appalachian Power Company, a subsidiary of American Electric Power, announced a proposal for a solar power generation project within its service area in southern West Virginia. The WV Energy Office, within the West Virginia Development Office, has identified and completed solar assessments for many open-pit mines across the state in collaboration with Marshall University's Center for Environmental, Geotechnical, and Applied Sciences (CEGAS) and the Brownfield Assistance Center (BAC).
