Aquifer thermal energy storage system contributing to the achievement of 'ZEB' in snowy regions.
Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 requires the widespread adoption of ZEB (Zero Energy Buildings). Japan Groundwater Development aims to promote ZEB in snowy and cold regions with our high-efficiency aquifer thermal energy storage system, launching the ZEB project in 2019. The demonstration facility was completed in February 2021. The demonstration facility employs a "total thermal supply system using high-efficiency aquifer thermal energy storage" that utilizes the thermal energy of groundwater for heating, cooling, hot water supply, and snow melting in winter. This high-efficiency aquifer thermal energy storage enables even more efficient system operation compared to conventional open-loop groundwater systems. The effect of storing cold energy in winter is particularly significant, allowing for free cooling in summer without operating heat pumps, greatly reducing summer electricity consumption. Snowy and cold regions face challenges with solar power generation during winter, making it difficult to achieve ZEB. However, the significant reduction in energy consumption allows the demonstration facility to realize ZEB. Japan Groundwater Development registered as a ZEB planner in 2021. As a leading company in geothermal and groundwater thermal energy, we are here to assist everyone aiming for ZEB.

basic information
- A total heat supply system utilizing high-efficiency aquifer thermal energy storage, addressing three heat demands: "air conditioning, hot water supply, and snow melting" with groundwater heat. - Free cooling utilizing cold thermal energy storage during the winter period. - Adoption of a dedicated heat pump that can directly exchange heat with groundwater as a refrigerant. - Combined use with other renewable energy sources, such as solar water heaters. - In the operational year 2021 (from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022), the electricity generated exceeded the electricity consumed, achieving 'ZEB' in practical operation. Japan Groundwater Development has been certified as a support organization for environmental learning in Yamagata Prefecture. We also welcome visits to our demonstration facilities and various other facilities.
