Our company, in collaboration with Okuma Corporation and NGK Insulators, has developed a technology to create high-hardness tool steel "SKD61" using metal additive manufacturing with "beryllium copper." ~Development Background~ In recent years, the use of engineering plastics has accelerated, many of which contain glass fibers, leading to accelerated wear of molds. If the mold has low durability, frequent mold changes and maintenance are necessary, resulting in high running costs and reduced mold operating rates. Therefore, by using metal additive manufacturing technology to shape high-hardness tool steel "SKD61" with "beryllium copper," which has high thermal conductivity and can shorten resin molding time, we aimed to improve productivity in the production of glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) and other materials that faced challenges in wear and productivity. ~Expected Application Areas~ ■ Molding molds and parts (pins, inserts) for engineering plastics (e.g., GFRP and CFRP) ■ Chill vents and chiller parts for aluminum die casting ■ Molds and parts for hot stamping (hot pressing) ■ Continuous casting molds used in metal melting and casting *Detailed examples of metal additive manufacturing processing are available on our company website.
