This is a raw material born from the concept of biomimicry. Biomimicry is the practice of learning from and mimicking strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges. In this instance, SEQENS attempted to discover plant molecules through a new approach based on biomimicry, which was inspired by observing animal behavior in the environment. Specifically, we used an approach known as animal pharmacology. At SEQENS, we were particularly interested in cases of animal pharmacology involving the western lowland gorilla, which is closely related to humans, following bonobos and chimpanzees. It has been reported that gorillas occasionally consume special grains derived from the plant Aframomum melegueta, deviating from their usual diet, particularly in Central Africa, especially in western Cameroon. Researchers became interested in the efficacy of A. melegueta due to this occasional consumption by gorillas. In plant extraction design, we aimed to apply active plant molecules such as gingerol and flavonoids, which possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, to combat inflammation in cosmetics.
