Reducing the labor burden on elderly silver workers through cardboard conversion. No need for nails or bolts, and with lightweight packaging, anyone, including women, can handle packing! Towards a company that is friendly to workers.
This is a case study of improvement at a company that was relying on elderly silver workers for packaging tasks. Currently, silver workers were assembling wooden pallets (wooden geta) using purchased lumber. We received feedback that: - Securing personnel is difficult. - Considering environmental impact, we would like to minimize the use of wood. Based on this feedback, we began the design process. [Reasons for not transitioning to cardboard] It seems that there had been a top-down goal to eliminate the use of wood for some time, but progress towards complete cardboard conversion was slow. - Currently, products were fixed to the wooden geta with bolts. Since cardboard cannot be secured with bolts, they hesitated to proceed. - They could not find a cardboard manufacturer that could meet these requirements. [Improvements made] - No need for nails or bolts. - Lightweight packaging. - Elimination of label application (printing directly on the packaging). ↓ ↓ - Anyone can package. - Simplified disposal for the end-user (from industrial waste to old paper recycling). - Reduction in air freight costs.
