This time, I will introduce the reasons for using various thicknesses of sheet metal to create lockers and the purpose of standardizing the plate thickness for making a single locker.
At Jinbara Works, we generally use a sheet metal thickness of 0.8 mm when creating valuable item lockers. However, for map cases, we use 1.0 mm, and for sports lockers, we use 1.6 mm, adjusting the thickness based on the product being made. While using thicker sheets can increase strength, using excessively thick sheets can make the product heavier and less user-friendly. Additionally, the price of materials varies with thickness, which can also increase the cost of the products. Therefore, at Jinbara Works, when we receive an order from a customer, we inquire about the size and weight of the items to be stored, as well as the usage conditions, such as whether people will be sitting on it. This allows us to select the appropriate sheet thickness to create a "durable" locker that meets the intended use. In the past, for a single locker, we have used various sheet metals besides the 0.8 mm, including 0.6 mm for reinforcements, 0.7 mm for inner boxes, and 3.2 mm for cams, among others, even for standard products.

basic information
At the time of design, we were purchasing cut sheets and using various thicknesses of sheets for a single locker, but a new problem arose when we started nesting in-house. This is the issue of poor yield, as previously mentioned in the article on "Improving Productivity through Lot Optimization." If we are mass-producing the same locker, the yield will improve, making it no longer a problem. However, the strength of Jinbara Works lies in its integrated production system that allows for a wide variety of small-batch production. Therefore, it was necessary to design with the premise of individual production, leading us to change to lockers with standardized sheet thicknesses. After the change, we were able to nest reinforcements from the same 0.8 mm base material without purchasing a new 0.6 mm base material, which helped keep costs down by increasing the thickness of the sheet metal. In this way, by making changes, including those that are not visible, even for the same locker, we will continue to provide better products to our customers.
