[Technical Column] Regeneration of Ion Exchange Resins

Ion exchange resins are used to adsorb ions of impurities present in water through ion exchange reactions, thereby purifying the water. The capacity to adsorb these ions has its limits, but once the limit is reached, it can be reused by performing a "regeneration" operation using chemicals. Cation exchange resins are regenerated using mineral acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, while anion exchange resins are regenerated using alkalis such as sodium hydroxide (caustic soda). Additionally, water softeners that use cation exchange resins are regenerated with a salt (sodium chloride) solution.
