Bond Elut SAX is a strong anion exchange sorbent because its functional group is a quaternary amine, which is always charged. The effect of the carbon atoms in the functional group is masked by the amine, resulting in reduced hydrophobic interactions of SAX. Since SAX is a strong anion exchanger, it serves as a good sorbent for retaining weak anions, such as carboxylic acids, which may not be strongly held by weak anion exchangers. The counterion is stable in the form of chloride.
