The purpose of surface preparation is to "increase the adhesion of the paint by cleaning the surface, thereby prolonging the life of the coating." There are two reasons why surface preparation helps the paint last longer. 1. There are no foreign substances on the surface, so the paint adheres firmly. If there are dust, dirt, rust, oil, or oxidation residues on the surface, they hinder the adhesion of the paint. It's the same as trying to stick tape to a dirty surface; it will peel off immediately. 2. The surface becomes uneven, which increases the adhesion of the paint. Surface preparation involves scraping or rubbing the surface. This creates fine irregularities where the paint can penetrate and adhere strongly. Additionally, it improves the uniformity of the paint film, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing finish. Thanks to these two points, the paint does not peel off, and the coating lasts longer. Surface preparation is a modest task, and after painting, it can be hard to tell whether it was done. However, its effect is far greater than the "number of coats" or "types of paint" used; if it is not done, it doesn't matter how good the paint is or how many layers are applied, it won't be very effective.
