The evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) detects the scattered light from particles of the analyte after evaporating and removing the mobile phase from the eluent coming from the column. Since the mobile phase must be volatile, mobile phases containing non-volatile salts such as phosphates cannot be used. Additionally, analytes that are highly volatile cannot be applied as they will evaporate along with the mobile phase. However, it is possible to detect compounds that do not have UV-Vis absorption or fluorescence.
