Case study of self-regulating heaters: Snow accumulation and snow slide prevention on bridges (Ooyagawa Bridge)

We installed self-regulating heaters to prevent snow accumulation on the Oya River Bridge adjacent to the Yabu IC of the Northern Kinki Toyooka Expressway. The arch bridge, located in a snowfall area, has experienced instances where snow accumulated on the left and right arch ribs fell and damaged vehicles passing underneath, which has been a concern. The focus was not on completely melting the snow on the bridge but rather on preventing the accumulated snow from falling onto the roadway and making it less likely to accumulate again after it has been removed.
