【Lecture Overview】 In international shipping, improvements in energy efficiency and the transition to alternative fuels and alternative energy are necessary to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by around 2050. Discussions are underway at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to introduce new regulations. Meanwhile, in Europe, the application of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) to the shipping sector will begin in 2024, and from 2025, the FuelEU Maritime regulation will come into effect, which will regulate the lifecycle GHG intensity of fuels and energy used by ships.
