In our society, there are already people with diverse backgrounds, including differences in gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and the presence or absence of disabilities. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, issues related to gender and diversity have gained attention. During disasters, the challenges present in society become more pronounced. It is known that in the Great East Japan Earthquake, the number of deaths in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima Prefectures was about 1,000 more for women than for men. Additionally, the mortality rate for people with disabilities was more than twice as high in some regions compared to the general population. The disparities related to gender and the issues of a society centered around able-bodied individuals are among the significant social challenges faced by our current society. I have been exploring solutions to these issues, focusing on the challenges faced by non-regularly employed women, who are often economically vulnerable, particularly those working in the public sector, as well as the intersectional discrimination faced by women with disabilities. My research theme is to understand the issues related to gender and diversity present in everyday life and to envision a more just, diverse, and sustainable society.
