basic information
**Lecture Overview** The transportation sector's aviation and shipping fields are referred to as "hard-to-abate" areas, making electrification challenging. Therefore, to advance decarbonization, it is necessary to introduce drop-in fuels such as biofuels and synthetic fuels, as well as non-drop-in fuels like hydrogen. Among these, the fuels available for aircraft are limited, while the fuels available for ships vary based on ship size, type, and range. Although there may be competition among biofuels in the short term, it is believed that if future differentiation can be achieved, Japan could progress towards balanced decarbonization. On the other hand, since international shipping falls outside the domestic boundary, there is a need for a transformation in the awareness of operators, including Scope 3 emissions. Additionally, in terms of sourcing raw materials and fuels, initiatives for local production and consumption become crucial from the perspective of energy security. This lecture will introduce various themes, including these challenges. **Lecture Topics** - Decarbonization of shipping fuels - Decarbonization of aviation fuels - Fuel procurement and competition with other sectors - Challenges and future initiatives in the shipping and aviation sectors (mainly for Japanese companies) - Related Q&A - Business card and information exchange session
