Heat flow (process) is a leading indicator of temperature (result). By measuring the flow of frictional heat energy generated at the machining point during machining, it is possible to monitor the condition of equipment and cutting tools and to expedite abnormal detection (predictive maintenance). <Examples of Utilizing the Heat Flow Sensor "Energy Flow"> ▼Overview: Measuring the heat flow and temperature caused by frictional heat when machining a torque converter. ▼Background: Until now, monitoring the machining state has relied on temperature sensors and vibration sensors. However, there are limitations in accurately detecting the timing of machining completion and the occurrence of abnormalities in real-time. To prevent unexpected equipment downtime due to cutting tool breakage, it is common to perform maintenance early based on past performance, experience, and the number of processes. ▼Evaluation Results: By installing the heat flow sensor and thermocouple close to the cutting tool, we measured the waveform of the heat flow transmitted to the arm from the frictional heat during machining. It was confirmed that the heat flow sensor could detect "machining completion" faster than the thermocouple.
