Visualizing pipe biofilms using both microbial community analysis and culture methods.
We provided a simultaneous analysis combining culture methods and amplicon sequencing analysis (microbial community analysis) for biofilms (slime-like attachments) that occur within piping. In addition to confirming microorganisms through microscopy, we achieved comprehensive understanding of microbial composition through identification of viable bacteria via isolation culture and microbial community analysis. We not only identified single species but also grasped the entire microbial community of the attachments. To avoid risks dependent on culture conditions and time loss due to retesting, we implemented both methods simultaneously, ensuring efficient and reliable information acquisition.
