The RRDE-3A rotating ring disc electrode device is a compact electronically controlled rotating electrode system designed for laboratory use. It integrates the drive unit and controller, weighing only 3.5 kg, with a space-saving design of 19 cm in width and 23 cm in depth. The rotation speed of the electrode can be controlled from a low of 100 rpm to a high of 8,000 rpm, boasting a display error of less than 1% for high precision. Electrodes that can be set in the device can be selected as either disc electrodes or ring disc electrodes depending on the purpose. Each electrode is manufactured in an extremely small size of φ12×25 mm. These electrodes can be easily attached and detached, making maintenance easy. Reference electrodes and counter electrodes can be selected from various options sold by BAS. (1) Research on Fuel Cells The main objectives are to understand the mechanism of the oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode and to increase the reaction rate. In the former, particularly, the RRDE method is suitable as a detection means to check whether hydrogen peroxide is generated as a reaction intermediate. (2) Research on Corrosion As the potential of the disk electrode is swept, it is possible to identify whether dissolution of the disk electrode or formation of a film occurs from the profile and values of the ring current as it transitions from a corrosion-active state to a passive state. As the potential sweep progresses, changes such as oxidation of the film or dissolution occur. (3) Others Research on the stability of oxide films (passive films) and research on UPD (underpotential deposition), among others.
