**Lecture Summary** The combination of blue light-emitting InGaN-based compound semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and phosphors has led to the rapid proliferation of bulb-shaped white LED lamps and white LEDs for backlighting in liquid crystal televisions. A white LED package with a luminous efficiency of 150 lm/W, surpassing that of fluorescent lamps, has been on sale since last autumn, and reports have indicated successful development of an ultra-high-efficiency white LED package with 249 lm/W at the research level. New nitride and oxynitride phosphors have been developed for these white LEDs, and research on novel phosphors, including these, is currently very active. This lecture will outline the development trends of phosphors for white LEDs, incorporating discussions on the optical properties of rare earth elements and the fundamentals of phosphors.
