[Analysis Case] Evaluation of Reduction Resistance of LIB Electrolyte by Quantum Chemistry Calculations

Comparison of the reduction resistance of solvents and additives in the electrolyte, and estimation of the structure of decomposition products is possible.

A film (SEI) is formed at the interface between the anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIB) and the electrolyte, and its characteristics significantly affect battery performance. Research and development of functional electrolytes aimed at generating films with excellent ionic conductivity that contribute to the stability of batteries is underway. Quantum chemical calculations can be utilized in the design of such electrolytes and films. This document evaluates the electron affinity of solvents and additives in LIB electrolytes through quantum chemical calculations and assesses their reduction resistance. Additionally, the structure of reduction products can be estimated from bond dissociation energy. [Analysis Case] Comparison of Redox Resistance of LIB Electrolyte Components through Quantum Chemical Calculations

You can predict the degradability of solvents and additives in the electrolyte solution, as well as the decomposition products.

In high-power lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), it is important to design the system to suppress the decomposition of the electrolyte during the charge and discharge processes. By adding components with low redox stability, it is possible to inhibit the decomposition of the main solvent during these processes and to form a high-quality SEI (Solid Electrolyte Interphase). By evaluating the redox stability of the electrolyte components through simulations, we can obtain indicators of the susceptibility of each component to decomposition during charge and discharge cycles, which can lead to the design of SEI components and characteristics. More suppression of dendrite growth than conventional level!

As represented by smartphone, PC, etc., the number of devices equipped with lithium-ion battery is increasing day by day. This is supported by the battery high capacity, but the use of metallic lithium is required to have even higher capacity, so research & development are underway. Up to now, one of the factors that prevented the practical use of metallic lithium was the formation of dendrite by metallic lithium due to the diffusion control during charge/discharge, which led to a decrease in battery performance.  This invention is about an electrolyte that solves the above issues. It has demonstrated that the smooth surface is maintained even after many charge/discharge cycles by controlling the rate-determining process. The same effect has been confirmed for sodium-ion battery, so the applicability of this invention is not limited to lithium-ion battery.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of Main Components of Lithium-ion Secondary Battery Electrolyte

This is an example of evaluating the organic solvent components of an electrolyte using GC/MS analysis. The measurement of the electrolyte in lithium-ion secondary batteries revealed that the main components of the organic solvents are ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC). Other components detected included diethyl carbonate (DEC) and sulfur compounds, with the latter possibly originating from additives.

The electrolyte used in lithium-ion batteries is generally composed of a solvent and an electrolyte salt, and is considered a homogeneous system on a macroscopic scale. However, from a microscopic perspective, phenomena such as solvation occur. Understanding the local structure of lithium-ion solvation and the reactions that occur when inserting into the positive and negative electrodes is important for the design of high-performance battery materials. This document presents a case study that evaluates the microscopic structure of lithium-ion solvation in the electrolyte of lithium-ion batteries using molecular dynamics simulations.
