We would like to introduce the positioning type of "Velcro" that we handle. This product is designed to be used with a combination of hooks with a special shape and loops arranged in high density. Generally, hook-and-loop fasteners engage simply by the hooks and loops touching each other, but this product does not engage just by lightly touching the loop surface with the hook. Instead, it allows for sliding adjustments of position, and once the position is set, pushing the hook into the loop to embed it activates the engagement function. Once engaged, the hook has a shape that makes it difficult to pull out, providing high engagement strength. As a result, it allows for easy fixation of objects compared to using screws, bolts, or nuts, and is increasingly adopted in applications where simplification of production processes is desired. The world's only 100% polyester manufacturing method.

Kurare Fastening has established a manufacturing method using 100% polyester without a back coating agent and has obtained a patent for it. This has opened a breakthrough in global standards. With this method, the polyurethane back coating traditionally required for hook-and-loop fasteners has been eliminated, successfully reducing CO2 emissions by lowering energy consumption during the process. (A significant amount of energy was needed for the heating process to promote the drying of the back coating agent and cross-linking reactions.) Now, all products of "Magic Tape" are produced using this method. As a result, for the first time in the hook-and-loop fastener industry, we have obtained the "Eco Leaf Environmental Label," actively promoting efforts to reduce environmental impact. Furthermore, in 2022, we launched a new recycled type. This uses polyester yarn derived from recycled PET resin made from used PET bottles as part of the raw materials, and since it is 100% polyester without a back coating, material recycling is possible. The hook-and-loop fastener "Magic Tape" balances performance and environmental considerations. Kurare Fastening will continue to promote "more human-friendly and more Earth-friendly manufacturing."

The history of "Velcro" (generic name: hook and loop fastener)

That is what nature has taught us.

Now, "hook and loop fasteners," which everyone may have used at least once, do you know when and where they were born? It was an event in Switzerland in 1948. A Swiss inventor, George de Mestral, who was out hunting in the mountains with his beloved dog, noticed that many wild burdock seeds were stuck to his clothes and his dog's fur. Curious, he took the seeds home and looked at them under a microscope. He discovered that the seeds were made up of countless hooks that clung tightly to clothing and dog fur. Inspired by this structure, he began developing a fastener that could be easily attached and detached. After years of trial and error, he created a fastener made of special nylon threads, consisting of countless hooks and loops. This was the birth of the hook and loop fastener. In Japan, our company applied for a patent in 1958, registered the trademark "Magic Tape" in 1960, and began sales. In 1964, it was adopted for the headrest covers of the Shinkansen, which led to its use in various applications such as blood pressure cuffs and sneakers, continuing to this day.

We would like to introduce a case that solved the concerns of our customers in the packaging and logistics industry who said, "The work with stretch film is difficult, and we want to do something about it." In response to the request for an easier way to bundle, we proposed the hook-and-loop fastener 'DUO-PLEX 25mm Black,' which allows for a method of folding back and securing, with both hooks and loops mixed on one side.
