[Published in the Industrial Economic Newspaper] Introducing the development story of the specially shaped wire for protecting optical fibers used in submarine cables.

An article about our "Optical Fiber Protection Specialty Wire for Undersea Cables" has been published in the Industrial Economic Newspaper! In the midst of the recession known as "Iron Cold" in 1984, when our company was still called "Naniwa Seikui," we received an order from a steel trading company in Tokyo requesting, "Please make a fan-shaped specialty wire by splitting a pipe into three vertically." A few days later, President Murao was surprised when he saw the drawings that arrived. It was the first order for a fan-shaped iron wire, and on top of that, they requested a tolerance of within plus or minus five thousandths of a millimeter. At that time in the industry, a tolerance of about one-tenth of a millimeter was the norm, and they were demanding an unprecedented level of precision, with a length of 1000 meters as well. Suitable for thermally conductive filler and high-strength filler of sealing resin

Aluminum nitride (AlN) is known to be used as a filler in the sealing resin of electronic components and semiconductors to efficiently dissipate the heat due to its high insulation and thermal conductivity. AlN particles are manufactured at high temperatures, but the conventional method can not include a large amount of AlN particles in the resin. In recent years, the improvement of sealing resin strength is required since the demands for miniaturization of electronic components and semiconductors are increasing.  This invention can simply provide a new form of AlN that can be suitably used as a thermally conductive filler and a high strength filler. This invention is characterized by the process of mixing the carbon and alumina particles in a crucible then to achieve a mixture ratio more important than the stoichiometric mixture ratio required to produce AlN, and irradiating the alumina particles with microwaves under a nitrogen atmosphere to reduce and nitride the alumina particles with carbon particles. This invention describes also the process of sublimating the AlN and attaching it to a sample in a non-heated state to produce an AlN wire.

Tohoku University Technology: New CoCr alloys with low Young's modulus, high wear and corrosion resistance, and superelasticity: T20-542

Alloys with high fatigue life and free of nickel element

β-Ti and conventional CoCr alloys are widely used for artificial joints because of their superior mechanical properties. Some β-Ti alloys show superelasticity and low Young's modulus; however, they have low wear resistance. Conventional CoCr alloys show excellent wear resistance, but they have very high Young's modulus, which is about 10 times that of human bones. Since low Young's modulus and wear resistance are properties with a trade-off relation, there has not been a biomaterial that realizes both.  This invention is about new CoCr alloys that have an even lower Young's modulus than β-Ti alloys, which also boast high wear and corrosion resistance, and superelasticity. This invention shows a fatigue life of more than 10 million cycles up to a strain of 1.65% and it is expected to be the next-generation biological material.  These alloys are characterized by a large elastic anisotropy. In the <100> direction, they show a Young's modulus of 30 GPa, comparable to human bones, making it suitable to use for artificial joints and bone plates. In the <111> direction, they have extremely high Young's modulus of 300 GPa, making it suitable to use for stents.
