Traditionally, many wastewater treatment facilities have used chlorine disinfection; however, concerns about residual chlorine in the discharged water, disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes and organic chlorine compounds, and environmental hormones have raised voices of concern about the negative impact on the ecosystems of fish and wildlife living in the discharge areas such as rivers and seas, leading to a reevaluation towards safer disinfection methods.
In recent years, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection has been introduced as an alternative technology to traditional chlorine disinfection. This method uses ultraviolet lamps that emit UV-C wavelengths with strong sterilizing effects for disinfection. It has no residual effects, is effective against all types of bacteria including E. coli, and is a highly safe device that can disinfect in a single pass and in a short time. Additionally, it eliminates the hassle of daily management tasks such as chemical replenishment, concentration management, and dosage adjustment.
