The thickness and density (basis weight) of sheet-like or plate-like objects are measured non-contact (using soft X-rays). Instead of directly measuring the thickness, the thickness and density (basis weight) are calculated by comparing with a reference material. In methods like X-ray thickness gauges, the thickness is estimated by measuring the attenuation during transmission through the air layer - sample - air layer, but the attenuation caused by the sample is significantly greater than that of the air, and the effects of vibrations during transport only manifest as changes in the thickness of the air layer, which are minimal. Therefore, high-precision measurements can be made even during transport. Films that include black films or fillers can also be measured.

The RPR-4000 ultrasonic physical property measurement device, manufactured by RITEC, supports ultrasonic nonlinear research with a high-performance, high-output ultrasonic pulser-receiver designed to minimize nonlinear components in the transmitted waveform. The sine wave tone burst pulser used by RITEC supplies low-distortion, high-output signals to the sensor that cannot be obtained with square wave pulsers. The standard 8KW sine wave tone burst pulser can sufficiently drive electromagnetic ultrasonic transducers (EMAT). Additionally, the 100dB low-noise receiver amplifies weak ultrasonic signals received by the EMAT to the necessary level with low distortion. RITEC's high-power products come standard with an automatic shutdown feature, which protects the transmission unit from failures of the transducer or short circuits in the wiring. The front panel display and keypad eliminate the need for an external control computer (though it can also be controlled from an external computer via RS-232 interface). In laser ultrasonics, information is "encoded" in the laser beam reflected from the surface of the test object. To achieve optimal sensitivity with a laser ultrasonic detector, it is desirable to maximize the reference light to the test specimen. Typically, commercial CW lasers can ensure frequency stability up to a limit of about 2W. At this output in a scattering state, sufficient S/N cannot be provided. PDL was designed to overcome such issues. The laser can be supplied through optical fibers up to 40m, allowing for flexible adaptation to industrial prototypes and commercial inspection systems.
