Form Energy (MA) has conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for its first battery manufacturing plant, Factory 1. The manufactured product, the iron-air battery, is a new class of battery with a very high cost-effectiveness. It can store energy for several days at one-tenth the cost of lithium-ion batteries. The reasons for choosing this location include that Weirton has historically suitable terrain and infrastructure for the steel industry, as well as expertise in producing excellent products from iron. Additionally, it is close to the existing pilot plant (PA).
