Types of additives for coatings, their effects and functions, considerations during formulation design, and market trends.

★ A detailed explanation including the characteristics of various additives, their usage methods, and mechanisms. ☆ Considerations when formulating additives that support the durability of coatings.

**Part 1: Summary of the Lecture** Paints used outdoors are damaged by ultraviolet rays contained in sunlight, losing their gloss and sometimes even failing to function as a protective film for the underlying materials. To protect these paints from UV damage, UV absorbers and HALS (light stabilizers) are added. The reason automotive paints can maintain their gloss for over ten years is, of course, due to the development and improvement of the materials by paint manufacturers, but such durability would not be achievable without these additives. In this session, I will introduce the characteristics of each and explain the points to consider in formulation design. **Part 2: Summary of the Lecture** Water-based and UV-curable systems are beneficial methods suitable for making paints more environmentally friendly. I will present examples and the chemical theories behind achieving solutions to issues such as foaming and difficulty in wetting the substrate associated with water-based systems, as well as performance improvements utilizing the reaction curing with UV monomers and oligomers, all achieved through the use of additives. **Part 3: Summary of the Lecture** I have worked at Nippon Paint Co., Ltd. for 40 years, particularly involved in the research, development, and application of automotive paints. I hope that the knowledge I have gained about additives during this process will be of some benefit to all of you.

Prevent surface troubles with paint and coatings!

Technical document to clarify common misunderstandings on-site! Introduction to the basics of surface tension and additives.

In improving the performance of coating agents, the question of whether to increase or decrease surface tension is surprisingly an area that has led to many misunderstandings. In this series, we will explain in detail five performance aspects where surface tension has a particularly significant impact, one by one. Leveling, wetting, beading and cratering, hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, and recoatability. In the final installment, we will organize all these topics from a comprehensive perspective to deepen your overall understanding. *For detailed content of the article, please refer to the PDF.
