Comparison of Features between Electron Beam and Laser Beam Methods in Metal 3D Printing

Comparing the output and layer thickness of the "electron beam method" and the "laser beam method"!

Our company offers contract manufacturing services using metal 3D printers. In metal 3D printers that use metal powder, there are two types of heat sources for melting the powder: "electron beam" and "laser beam." The "electron beam" has a higher output compared to the "laser beam," resulting in faster manufacturing speeds. In the "electron beam" method, a pre-sintered state is created to prevent the charging of metal powder, and since it is manufactured at high temperatures, there is less residual stress after manufacturing. This also reduces distortion and cracking due to internal stress, and less support material is required. In the "laser beam" method, smaller powder particle sizes are used, which results in slower manufacturing speeds, but it excels in surface roughness of the manufactured products and is suitable for creating relatively fine structures. 【Features】 ■ Electron Beam Method - Fast manufacturing speed - Requires less support material, providing excellent cost competitiveness - Almost no residual stress occurs after manufacturing, suppressing distortion and cracking due to internal stress ■ Laser Beam Method - Uses powder with small particle sizes - Extremely excellent surface roughness of the products, suitable for creating fine structures *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

[Coronavirus Measures] Please utilize high antibacterial pure copper through metal 3D printing.

By applying a metallic 3D coating on the surface of pure copper instruments that come into contact with the human body, we can eliminate the coronavirus!

Our company specializes in manufacturing and shaping using pure copper. It has been confirmed that the coronavirus attached to pure copper dies at a rate of 96% within 2 hours and over 99% within 5 hours. Please refer to the downloadable materials for specific data. Metals like stainless steel, which are used in many instruments, do not have this effect. Pure copper is a metal with high reflectivity, making it difficult to shape appropriately as it reflects laser beams, but our company has made it possible to shape pure copper using electron beams. We are the only company in Japan capable of shaping pure copper. Please share your ideas for applying this to your products.

[Examples of Metal 3D Printer Utilization] Molds

By optimizing the cooling channels of molds with a metal 3D printer, the cooling effect can be enhanced, preventing sticking, extending lifespan, and improving the quality of molded products.

Our company, which provides contract manufacturing services using metal 3D printers, also specializes in the production of molds unique to metal 3D printing. We can design and arrange internal cooling channels that conform to mold shapes, which is impossible with traditional machining. Molds with high cooling efficiency will improve the production efficiency of your manufacturing line. We achieve low costs through a hybrid manufacturing method that produces the base material using traditional machining while adding complex shapes with a metal 3D printer. Please feel free to contact us for prototypes, delivery times, estimates, or any questions you may have. For more details, please refer to the downloadable materials.

Examples of using metal 3D printers in jigs and tools.

By utilizing metal 3D printers, we achieved weight reduction of fixtures through the use of lightweight steel types and a hollow structure. We were also able to improve processing efficiency and safety.

As a jig for NC lathes, we proposed the use of lightweight and high-strength titanium alloy for metal additive manufacturing to customers who have previously used iron-based materials. By adopting a hollow structure, we achieved a 50% reduction in weight, which increased the rotation rate of the NC lathe by 20%, resulting in a 15% improvement in productivity. Furthermore, the reduction in jig weight allowed operators to handle it with one hand, enhancing both safety and work efficiency. Your jigs may also expand into new possibilities by utilizing metal 3D printing. Please feel free to contact us for prototypes, delivery times, estimates, or any questions you may have.

Metal 3D Printer Mass Customization

Mass customization unique to metal 3D printers.

It is true that metal 3D printers have the disadvantage of not being suitable for mass production, but they can handle mass production if the items are small. For example, if there are 100 types of aluminum caps, it would require preparing 100 different molds, but with a metal 3D printer, all 100 types of aluminum caps can be created in a single print (there is no need to print 100 times). In this way, metal 3D printers have the advantage of being suitable for mass customization. Fields where mass customization made possible by metal 3D printers can be adopted include the medical field, with implants and dentures being representative examples, and in the industrial field, there is potential for use in low-volume, high-variety production. Our company can create high biocompatibility materials such as titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V), pure titanium, cobalt-chromium, as well as materials like stainless steel (SUS), Inconel, and copper using metal 3D printers. Please feel free to contact us, even if it is just for prototyping.

[Case Study] Guhring UK

Producing profitable parts with Markforged 3D printers! Contributing to the company's revenue growth.

Gühring UK manufactures custom cutting and milling tools for large companies around the world. Depending on the size and complexity of the components, it used to take up to 8 weeks to design, test, and manufacture using special tools in-house. Therefore, we adopted the Markforged Metal X system and a composite 3D printer that utilizes continuous fiber carbon. We have received feedback that by 3D printing parts instead of manually machining them, we were able to significantly reduce lead times from the validation of tool design to tool printing. [Case Summary] ■ Reduced production time: 66% ■ Cost reduction for jigs: 75% ■ Weight reduction for jigs: 60% *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Metal Binder Jetting Metal 3D Printer 'PX100'

It can create high-precision metal parts at ultra-high speeds. It supports the manufacturing of complex production-grade metal parts and enables mass production at the required timing.

Markforged's 'PX100' is a metal 3D printer using metal binder jetting technology. It has been developed for mass production of parts based on the high-precision binder jetting technology cultivated by Digital Metal. It features a print head equipped with 70,400 nozzles and offers a resolution of 1600 dpi, enabling production of approximately 500 cm3 of parts per hour under normal conditions, with a maximum of 1000 cm3 per hour. As of December 2022, there are 10 certified materials available, with more materials to be added in the future. The standard layer thickness of the powder is 42 μm. The high productivity of this printer contributes to reducing part costs. This has been achieved through a robust manufacturing platform and continuously improved control software. Additionally, it is equipped with features for enhancing and automating the production line, such as the capability to expand the inert gas supply module in preparation for future material additions and a mechanism for feeding materials prepared by the PPS1000 (automatic powder preparation unit) into the printer. For more details, please refer to the catalog. Feel free to contact us with any inquiries.

Production automation with Digital Metal 3D printers - Japanese subtitles

Experience the cutting-edge of metal 3D printing and the future of manufacturing with the Binder Jetting method proposed by Digital Metal in this video.

We would like to introduce the "No-Hand Production Concept" that Digital Metal is working on with its binder jetting 3D printers, a production automation system centered around 3D printing. The system aims to produce small, precise metal parts at a high productivity and low cost by having robots handle most of the processes. You can watch the following processes in the video: - 3D printing - Robot handling of the build box - CNC-controlled powder removal device - Robot loading of parts into the furnace Since 2013, Digital Metal has been supplying parts for industrial applications, and as of May 2019, approximately 40,000 parts of 30 different types are being mass-produced annually. Unlike Japan, where the use of metal 3D printers is mainly limited to prototyping and mold manufacturing, a trend is emerging overseas to directly utilize parts produced by printers. Please take a look at the cutting edge of metal 3D printing and the future direction of the manufacturing industry.
