Takaokaya's Philosophy The origin of traditional crafts in Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital, is generally said to date back to the Heian period (about 1200 years ago), when it began with the creation of clothing and daily necessities for the people living in the imperial court. In Kyoto, many place names derived from these traditional crafts still remain, reflecting the active role of artisans and the cultivation of a craftsman culture. Additionally, Kyoto's traditional crafts have played a significant role in the development of Japan's unique temple culture and the culture of tea ceremony. This environment in Kyoto has nurtured people who live by handwork and the pride of being a Kyotoite for 1200 years. Since its founding 90 years ago in Kyoto, "Takaoka" has been deeply involved in the lives of the people of Kyoto through handmade cushions. Now, as we enter the 21st century, the lifestyle of the Japanese is being reevaluated from a predominantly Western lifestyle to what truly constitutes a comfortable and sensibly rich lifestyle for us. Along with this trend, we at the "Rakuchu Takaokaya" brand wish to propose a style of "New Wa - Modern Wa" in conjunction with Japan's and Kyoto's traditions and techniques.
