Business Activities
The history of Arkema's polyamides is long, starting in 1938 when its predecessor, OrganiCo, began developing polyamide 11 (derived from castor oil). In 1944, the company built a pilot plant, and commercial production began in 1955. Currently, Arkema is the only company commercially producing polyamide 11, carrying out the integrated production of 11-aminoundecanoic acid (PA11 monomer) from castor oil and PA11. Additionally, Arkema manufactures and sells high-performance polyamide resins such as polyamide 12 derived from petroleum, polyamide elastomers, random copolymer polyamides (hot melt), polyamides with excellent transparency, polyphthalamides with outstanding heat resistance, rigid methylene diamine (MXD), and polyamide-polyolefin alloys. Besides pellets for injection molding and extrusion, they also produce and sell PA11 powder for powder coating on metals, additives for paints, impact modifiers for CFRP, and Orgasol, which is used as a base material in cosmetics. Kynar PVDF has balanced performance, exhibiting the heat, chemical, and UV resistance characteristic of fluoropolymers, while also being moldable by conventional methods. It can be dissolved in polar solvents for use in paints and lithium-ion battery applications.
