A sheath heater is a heating element that surrounds a heating wire with an insulating material for electrical insulation, and further protects it with a metal tube on the outside. The lifespan is fundamentally a function of the wire diameter and temperature of the heating wire, but corrosion of the heater pipe can also limit its lifespan. Metals ultimately oxidize or chlorinate, leading to corrosion and forming metal oxides or metal chlorides.
