[Data] Comparison of Local CO2 Application Effects on Tomatoes and Colored Peppers

In the cultivation of tomatoes and colored peppers, localized CO2 application within the crop can effectively improve yields.

Using liquefied carbon dioxide (carbonic gas) and porous tubes installed within the crop area, a method of applying CO2 during the day with target concentrations of approximately 440 ppm in summer and autumn, and 500 ppm in low-temperature periods, can maintain the CO2 concentration inside the facility higher than that of the outside air, which is effective in increasing yields in tomato and paprika cultivation. We conducted CO2 application (application to the main stem) on "Yayoi Hime" and will report on the effects of CO2 concentration in the greenhouse on yield and quality.

This document introduces a report on the investigation of the effects of CO2 application (at the base of the plant) on yield and quality within a greenhouse, where the CO2 concentration was manipulated. The test variety used was "Yayoihime," with planting conducted on September 23, 2016, and harvesting taking place between December 22, 2016, and June 9, 2017. Three test greenhouses were prepared: one set to a CO2 concentration of 600 ppm, another to 400 ppm, and a control without CO2 application, to investigate yield and quality. In order to develop effective local application methods for CO2 in gas-phase cultivation, we investigated the effects of CO2 concentration settings on yield and application efficiency in winter-spring tomato cultivation.

In the application of liquefied carbon dioxide (CO2) using the biogas method, the high cost of CO2 is a challenge; however, it allows for more localized concentration control compared to combustion methods, and there is potential for effective application even under conditions with high ventilation rates when skylights are open. Therefore, to develop an effective CO2 application method using the biogas method, we conducted CO2 applications at varying set concentrations in a greenhouse for winter-spring tomato cultivation and examined the effects on CO2 consumption and yield. [Conditions] The experimental greenhouse was divided into three treatment areas: high concentration application zone (800±100 ppm), low concentration application zone (500±50 ppm), and no application zone, with the skylight opening temperature set at 27°C. [Research] The Effects of Carbon Dioxide Application on Strawberry Yield and Quality

A three-year study was conducted on the effects of carbon dioxide application on the yield and quality of the Gunma Prefecture cultivated strawberry variety "Yayoi Hime."

This document introduces the effects of carbon dioxide application on the yield and quality of the strawberry variety "Yayoi Hime." The carbon dioxide application was carried out using two methods: local application of liquefied carbon dioxide (directly to the root zone) and combustion-type application using LP gas. When the carbon dioxide concentration in the greenhouse was managed at 600 ppm, the number of fruits and average fruit weight increased, resulting in a yield increase of 14-29% compared to no application, and a 5-10% increase when maintained at 400 ppm. Since the greenhouse is opened, we thought that CO2 application was unnecessary, but when we measured the CO2 concentration within the group using the Breath sensor, we found that the CO2 concentration was dropping during the day. Since Breath allows for local application, CO2 is less likely to be wasted, and because the temperature does not rise, I believe it is suitable for summer-autumn cultivation crops. Additionally, besides controlling CO2 concentration, it can also perform intermittent control via a timer, making cost adjustments easier, which I think is another advantage.
