In the manufacturing process of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), we developed a blade to finely cut carbon fibers as thin as human hair. Our goal was to extend the durability and prevent fiber remnants, and after about a year of trial and error and extensive testing, we achieved results that exceeded our initial durability target by more than three times. The customer's request was to achieve a blade that cuts smoothly and effortlessly. During the development phase, it became clear that thin and soft polyurethane is a very difficult material to cut. After about six months of trial and error and repeated testing, we sharpened the blade angle and applied a fluorine coating. We developed a blade for cutting polarizing films used in LCD TVs and smartphones. Since polarizing films are made of very hard materials, we conducted extensive research on what angle to set the blade tip. Additionally, because fine chipping can lead to product defects, high process management was also required. As a result, we successfully developed a highly durable blade that does not compromise the high picture quality of LCDs. A circular blade was developed for slitting special films. This special film is thin, but very high quality was required for the cutting edge. Since the circular blade has edges sharpened on both sides all around, it is difficult to create a clean edge without chipping. Paper is a very tough material for cutting tools.
