GRIPS Corporation announced that it will begin providing technical support for the development of a three-dimensional model construction system utilizing photogrammetry and robotization technology for fragile wooden tablets (including excavated wooden products, hereinafter referred to as "wooden tablets, etc.") as part of research promoted by the Independent Administrative Institution National Cultural Properties Organization Nara Cultural Property Research Institute and Ritsumeikan University. Photogrammetry technology is a technique for extracting three-dimensional spatial information from multiple photographs and is applied in the construction of three-dimensional models of buildings and cultural properties, as well as in assessing damage during disasters. The equipment for acquiring images for photogrammetry is being developed in collaboration with Asoka Engineering, GRIPS's development technology partner, and applies the technology of the commercially available depth synthesis microscope Z-SCAN. Additionally, by adopting a rotating gantry structure used in CT scans, the automation of the image acquisition process will also be realized. In September 2023, GRIPS will begin developing an automated dispensing system that can be provided with high precision and low cost in collaboration with MTM Systems, Luominen Lab, and Yoshiki Nakahachi. By utilizing the outcomes of this project, it will become possible to implement complex repetitive tasks in laboratories, particularly in the medical and bio fields, in a compact and low-cost manner, enabling the automation of vast repetitive experimental tasks in drug discovery and new material development, and it is expected to acquire high-precision experimental data quickly and affordably. The system being built consists of the automated dispensing machine OT-2, the industrial robot arm UFactory Lite6, and the general-purpose robot control platform ROSSetter. ROSSetter is a general-purpose robot controller based on ROS2 that GRIPS is independently developing, and in this project, the beta version of ROSSetter is planned to be adopted as the overall integration controller for the system.
