About 15 years ago, I was involved in the development of lightweight materials at my previous job. I advocated for their application in small vehicles, but it was dismissed as a "childish idea." Now, small vehicles are gaining attention. What would have happened if I had seriously pursued their application in small vehicles? This is a story about a device for synthesis called electrochemical synthesis. In this research example, I was very interested in how the reaction vessel was made more efficient and how flow chemistry could be applied. Until now, scaling up flow chemistry has been a significant challenge. So far, it has been common to address this by using a numbering-up approach, where multiple very small devices are operated simultaneously without making each individual device larger. I am writing my daily thoughts. There used to be a magazine called "Models and Radio," which featured a monthly series on how to make model trains. Unlike the examples often showcased in model train magazines today, it was focused on teaching middle and high school students how to build them properly. There was a copy of that magazine at the local library, so I borrowed it and made copies at the only stationery store nearby that could do copying. I have been writing my daily thoughts. A little while ago, I was a speaker at a web-based seminar. During that time, there was a bit of trouble, and as a result, I was told by the person in charge at the company organizing the seminar that "there were complaints from participants." However, recently I found out that this was a dubious claim. I also learned that popular seminar speakers often cut and paste information from the internet, operating under the so-called "first come, first served" mentality. Furthermore, I became aware of seminars organized by public institutions. These are run by individuals who have been planning training programs in companies for many years, and I found out that the content is substantial and the tuition fees are very affordable. I have been writing my daily thoughts. I believe it was during my university days. My piano teacher suddenly introduced a new practice method. It involved playing each finger slowly with a very soft sound and then completely relaxing the pressure the moment the key was struck. It was more about pressing the keys than actually playing, and this practice method went on endlessly. In any case, it was quite depressing. The most troubling part was that after starting this boring practice, I had no idea what had changed. I felt as if I had been thrown into a completely dark wilderness. Later, I stopped going to piano lessons as I needed to focus on my studies in graduate school. There was even a period when I didn’t touch the piano at all, but about ten years ago, I started playing again and suddenly thought: indeed, when you relax, the sound resonates. As lightweight materials such as CFRP and GFRP, FRP continues to be expected as a next-generation structural material. In this research, we successfully devised and prototyped a groundbreaking molding method that replaces the role of gas in an autoclave with thermally expandable microcapsules, making it simple and not limited by volume. We attempted a new FRP molding method that does not use an autoclave, utilizing the thermally expandable microcapsules discovered in this research, and achieved favorable results. In addition to cost reduction, the absence of volume restrictions allows for applications in ultra-large molded products that were previously unimaginable, thus expanding the range of applications.
