Our company is advancing the verification of our solenoid valves for hydrogen compatibility to supply safe and reliable valve products for hydrogen use. As part of this effort, we conducted material tests to confirm how much the constituent materials of the valve products are affected by hydrogen. In the tests, we used material test specimens made of metals and resins to evaluate the impact on material strength in a hydrogen gas environment. The results showed that there is no impact on material strength in environments with hydrogen pressure below 1 MPa. Target materials: SUS304, SUS316, SUS316L, SUS430, K-M31, A6061-T6, A2017, SK-5, PEEK, PPS, PTFE, SUS304-WPB, EPDM, FKM.

To date, it has been involved in over 90 space missions, conducting experiments in life sciences in microgravity environments, including the design and construction of hardware. Currently, BioServe Space Technologies is developing a system called the BioServe In-Space Cell Expansion Platform (BICEP) to support the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells in microgravity. Hematopoietic stem cells are the precursor cells for red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Bone marrow transplantation, a treatment method for leukemia and cancer, involves infusing hematopoietic stem cells harvested from healthy donors into patients, allowing them to settle in the patient's bone marrow and regenerate the blood system. Additionally, when proliferated on Earth, the proportion and robustness of stem cells decrease as the culture progresses. It is believed that the microgravity environment better mimics the conditions of hematopoietic stem cells within the bone marrow, and it is expected that it will enable the proliferation of higher quality cells for transplantation.

They are considering the incorporation of our ultra-compact HVA series valves into the thrusters they are developing. This thruster primarily uses water instead of harmful propellants like hydrazine, which have traditionally been used, making it environmentally friendly and efficient amid the growing demand for small satellites. Previously, when the company used valves from other manufacturers, they had to cut the connecting pipes in-house after purchase because the length did not match. However, during the cutting process, metal shavings sometimes entered the valve, hindering its normal operation. [Challenges and Solutions] Initially, Howe Industries intended to process the pipes for our valves in-house, but they were very pleased to learn that we could customize the pipe length to their specifications. This allows them to avoid the hassle of internal processing and incorporate a reliable valve into their equipment. We hope this custom valve will be integrated into the thruster, enabling actual spaceflight in the near future.

In fluorescent single-molecule imaging, the fading of fluorescent molecules is a problem. To observe weak single-molecule fluorescence in real-time, strong excitation light is required, which inevitably leads to faster fluorescence fading. One method to reduce fluorescence fading is to conduct observations in an environment that mimics the reduced state and low oxygen concentration found in biological tissues. A low-oxygen environment can be achieved using commercially available microscope stage top incubators, but when administering reagents to the sample, it is necessary to maintain the reagents in the same low-oxygen environment. [Challenges and Solutions] Takasago Electric Industry, tasked with solving this problem, developed the device "CEIM-C001," which maintains a low-oxygen environment on the microscope stage while administering reagents to the observation sample. This was achieved by installing an observation sample and a reagent reservoir within the low-oxygen stage top incubator, and incorporating a flow path that includes a pump inside the incubator. As a result, continuous observation, which was previously limited to a maximum of several tens of seconds under conventional observation conditions, can now be extended to several minutes, allowing for longer-duration fluorescence imaging of living cells.

Additionally, the pumps required for this specialized payload needed to provide a consistent and accurate flow rate of 125 +/- 25 uL/min. Fortunately, Space Tango found the SBP series syringe pumps, which met all of these stringent criteria. For other payloads, they utilized the RP-Q series tube pumps. The selection was driven by the pumps' compact size, reliability, and high levels of biocompatibility and sterility. Takasago Electric aims to continue contributing to cutting-edge research in space through Space Tango in the future.

In response, we customized based on our quantitative dispensing pumps, the MLP series and PKP series. By optimizing the power balance between the spring and actuator, we were able to discharge the high-viscosity fluid (150cps) that the customer desired. We achieved a discharge pressure 1.5 times higher than conventional standards according to our inspection criteria, and received very high praise for the prototype. **Case 2** We received an inquiry from a customer in the analysis industry in the Czech Republic, who was looking for a valve that could handle corrosive solutions at high pressure for a waste analysis device. In response, we optimized the diaphragm shape, spring, and actuator based on our diaphragm valve MTV series, making it capable of withstanding high pressure. Additionally, to allow for the flow of corrosive solutions, we adopted non-metallic materials for the wetted parts.

When considering applications for space exploration, challenges such as compact size, lightweight, and low power consumption arose, leading to interest in our latch-type compact corrosion-resistant solenoid valve NLV series. Additionally, through our expertise in customization, we designed a miniature manifold to match the desired flow pattern. After repeated prototyping, we successfully developed a gas chromatograph for space exploration applications. Recent research demonstrated kidney regeneration from organ-deficient animals by transplanting kidney-specific stem cells called renal progenitor cells into mice that cannot develop kidneys using the electric injector, although the kidneys were immature (Yamanaka S, JASN, 2019). In the future, the aim is to create regenerated kidneys within large animals such as pigs and utilize those kidneys for the treatment of patients with renal failure.
