Column: Sales Employees Who Are Completely Unable to Handle Non-Standard and Unexpected Situations
In the workforce, it is said that about 12% are in sales positions, which can be considered a relatively high ratio. At a company I used to belong to, employees in the sales department would celebrate even a slight increase in market share in a very niche industry, but they had no interest in applying their success to broader contexts, merely laughing condescendingly as if to say, "Your thinking is so rigid!"
For example, imagine there are elementary school brothers where the one who scores better on the Japanese language test gets to eat three-quarters of a not-so-fancy chiffon cake from a candy store, while the one who scores worse gets one-quarter. Furthermore, if they score over 30 points on the math test, they would be allowed to eat an entire high-end tart topped with lots of fruit from the neighboring cake shop.
What did the brothers do? Despite fiercely competing for scores between 90 and 100 in Japanese, they showed no interest in the high-end tart and consistently scored only between 10 and 20 in math, resulting in "never having eaten the high-end tart."
