It is possible to develop special loading conditions as a dedicated algorithm.

In building material manufacturers, heavy building materials are loaded onto trucks after creating a load plan, taking safety and workability into consideration. Before the introduction of the Vanning Master, multiple office employees planned using Excel (including the creation of work diagrams) while considering constraints related to safety, workability, and unloading. By developing a unique algorithm that takes into account constraints related to loading, we have successfully significantly reduced these administrative tasks. The optimization of space utilization through the algorithm generally aims to increase the loading (filling) rate as the primary objective. Prioritizing workability makes the evaluation criteria for the results of the algorithm ambiguous, which made the development difficulty very high. The development of the algorithm for building material manufacturers was made possible by our consultants, who understood the field and conducted detailed interviews to clarify the operational rules and metrics involved in the work.

The Vanning Master is a simulation system that calculates loading in three dimensions (3D calculation) based on the size information of individual products, rather than calculating cargo loading through volume calculations. It allows for precise calculations, including the effective use of space above the truck, as shown in the following diagram. In multi-tier loading, the top surface of the palletized cargo on the lower tier is flattened, and additional palletized cargo is loaded on top of it. This enables calculations that increase the loading rate. The introduction of Vanning Master has successfully revolutionized the loading rates for transportation of large lots of the same product, such as in trunk transportation at manufacturers.

[Lecturer] Hideo Yamada, Ph.D. Honorary Professor, Waseda University Visiting Professor, Business Breakthrough University Graduate School [Key Lecture Content] Companies face various trade-offs (dilemmas) such as quality vs. cost, inventory levels vs. service levels, and standardization vs. differentiation. Traditionally, companies have responded to trade-offs by (1) finding a balance or (2) prioritizing one over the other. However, this does not lead to fundamental solutions. In this lecture, I will propose a third method that is neither balancing nor prioritizing. Using case studies from over 50 Japanese companies, I will explain it in an easy-to-understand manner.
