[Case Study] Detecting Signs of Illness in Cattle Using IoT

An important factor in managing the health of cows is effectively monitoring their rumination. Generally, cows ruminate for about 6 to 10 hours a day, but extreme changes in rumination time can indicate signs of estrus or changes in health condition.
Particularly in the two months before and after calving, there are many accidents involving mother cows, and changes in health can lead to difficulties in calving or increased susceptibility to illness. Therefore, it is essential to quickly identify signs of health changes, and an IoT technology-based solution for managing cow health and injuries has been developed.
By attaching a vibration-powered beacon to the cow's jaw, the beacon generates power through the up-and-down movement of the jaw during feeding and rumination, emitting radio waves in the process.
Additionally, an IoT gateway is installed to receive the beacon's radio waves, which then transfers data to the cloud. This allows personnel to monitor the health status of the cows in real-time using tablets or smartphones.
