Energy Practice [Key Lecture Content] Japan's electricity and energy market is facing significant changes, but the impact of these changes is not necessarily definitive and continues to increase future uncertainties. Against the backdrop of the recent rapid expansion of generative AI and data centers, the previously assumed scenarios for electricity demand suppression are being significantly reassessed, though opinions on this are not uniform. Additionally, on the supply side, the business environment is becoming increasingly challenging due to rising costs and increased risks associated with renewable energy, raising doubts about the assumption of continued expansion, including offshore wind power. The energy basic plan, approved by the Cabinet in February 2025, is not functioning adequately as a foundation for management and business strategies in light of this background. Furthermore, with the introduction of new markets and systems such as real-time markets, supply capacity obligations, medium- to long-term markets, and GX-ETS on the horizon, the ability to respond to regulations has become a key factor in the competitiveness of electricity and energy businesses. In this lecture, we will consider the changes in demand and supply structures, the impact of new markets/systems, and the influence of political and international situations, exploring the key points that companies should focus on in their strategic considerations post-2025 from multiple perspectives.
