Japan Science and Technology Agency Advanced Low Carbon Technology Development Project
We aim to achieve research and development results that lead to the creation of green innovation.
In order to continuously and steadily promote the reduction of greenhouse gases over the medium to long term, we aim to create "game-changing technologies" that realize breakthroughs and fundamentally transform existing concepts. We will conduct research and development to create technologies with significant potential for greenhouse gas reduction based on new scientific and technological insights. Specifically, we will cover the phases from basic research targeting fundamental scientific and technological elements that lead to new principles and breakthroughs, to the research and development phase that expands and develops the generated technological seeds into technologies that can significantly contribute to greenhouse gas reduction. We will provide research and development funding of approximately 10 million to 100 million yen per project annually, supported for up to 10 years, while conducting stage-gate evaluations. The research and development outcomes obtained through this support are expected to lead to future green innovations.

basic information
【Features】 ○ The Promotion Committee will conduct interim evaluations as a stage-gate assessment to determine the feasibility of continuing research and development during the implementation period. Based on the evaluation results, the research and development plan will be revised, research and development issues may be discontinued, and the addition of new projects will be considered. Additionally, a post-evaluation will be conducted after the research and development period ends. ○ If significant research and development results that lead to green innovation are achieved, a new research plan will be formulated to focus on the research and accelerate the outcomes, allowing for progression to a new stage of research and development. ○ The research and development period, including the new stage of research and development, can last up to a maximum of 10 years. ● For other functions and details, please contact us.

Company information
Regarding JST's main business of funding (allocation of competitive research funds), the method of formulating science and technology strategies has been fundamentally reviewed through project sorting, resulting in a clearer positioning that contributes to the "achievement of strategic goals." In Japan's scientific research funding, there are mainly two pillars: the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Kakenhi) from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and JST's Strategic Creation Research Promotion Program. Both fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, but while Kakenhi supports research based on researchers' free ideas in a bottom-up manner, JST's funding is top-down, responding to societal and industrial needs and supporting research that leads to the achievement of specific strategic goals in areas deemed important for national strategy. To achieve strategic goals, it is recognized that rather than allowing individual researchers to conduct research freely, it is important to set research areas to achieve the goals, select optimal research leaders, recruit and adopt researchers, and promote research, thus managing the area effectively.
