High-performance polyamide 11 made from 100% plant-derived carbon: high-performance polyamide based on PA11 (Nylon 11).
By pressing the seeds of "castor bean," which can be cultivated even in barren land where edible plants do not grow, we can obtain "castor oil." Arkema synthesizes 11-aminoundecanoic acid (PA11 monomer) by chemically processing castor oil and is the only company in the world that manufactures and sells polyamide 11 (PA11, nylon 11) under the brand name Rilsan. Rilsan has obtained the biomass mark established by the Japan Organic Resources Association and has been certified as biomass plastic by the Japan Bioplastics Association, being listed on the positive list. Rilsan (PA11) has good crystallinity, making it significantly superior in "chemical resistance," "impact resistance," and "thermal degradation resistance" compared to PA12 (nylon 12), which has similar properties. Due to the following excellent characteristics, Rilsan has been used in various applications for over 60 years: - Low density (1.03) - Abrasion resistance and scratch resistance - Wide temperature range (-40°C to 150°C) - Weather resistance - Excellent mechanical strength - Heat resistance - Flexibility - Molding processability - Chemical resistance - Low water absorption rate

basic information
The extrusion grade has a high melting viscosity, allowing for the extrusion of tubes with small tolerances suitable for industrial applications. Tubes made from Rilsan are flexible and have excellent chemical resistance, making them widely used in various industrial fields such as fuel tubes, pneumatic brake lines, automotive and industrial cooling hoses, sewage piping, household gas piping, hydraulic pipes, and food and medical tubes. Rilsan maintains excellent impact resistance at continuous use temperatures of approximately 90 to 100°C, even at -40°C (often -60°C). Rilsan has excellent injection moldability due to its fluidity, fast crystallization rate, and wide molding temperature range. Additionally, by adding reinforcing materials to Rilsan, the following characteristics can be further imparted: 1) Increased compressive strength 2) Higher flexural modulus 3) Higher heat distortion temperature 4) Smaller linear expansion coefficient Compared to PA6 and PA66, Rilsan has lower water absorption and shrinkage rates, and superior surface smoothness, making it suitable for various industrial applications such as automotive parts and electrical product connectors.

Applications/Examples of results
Rilsan can be processed using almost all molding techniques, including extrusion and injection molding. It is used in numerous products for both automotive and general industrial applications, but it has a particularly long history in automotive applications, where it has been reliably used for many years in fuel and coolant tubes, truck air brake tubes, quick connector parts, and more. It is extremely stable against salts that can easily degrade PA (nylon), such as zinc chloride, and is beginning to be used in construction materials as well. Additionally, due to its lightweight and toughness, it is also adopted in products like sports shoes. Furthermore, in recent years, its application in environmentally friendly products has been increasing, as it is a plant-based plastic that is consistently available.
